Steelers Guide to RV Tailgating
Imagine packing 65,050 people into a single NFL stadium. That’s exactly what Heinz Field does when a Steelers NFL football game is sold out. Getting a tailgating RV through this crowd can be a challenge if you don’t plan ahead.
Area RV Parks
There are many RV Parks around Pittsburgh to choose from and they offer a wide range of amenities. Bear Run Campground and Mountain Top Campground are two options that will put you within 20 – 40 minutes of Heinz Field. The further you venture away from the city the lower the campground rates tend to be and the more amenities that are included. Your choice depends on your priorities. RV parks that are close to Heinz Field are great for people that want to get to the game early and only need a place to park overnight. However, a little extra driving on game day can save you some money and open the door to extra amenities.
Staying only 20 minutes from Heinz Field will cost you around $60 per night and includes water and electric hookups, and a dump station. These sites are great for someone looking for a place to park overnight and get to the stadium early. However, if you want more bang for you buck you might want to consider looking at RV parks a little further from Heinz Field. A park with a 40 minute commute will only cost around $40 per night. In addition to basic water and electric hookups, you’ll have access to a swimming pool, playground, recreational fields, lakes/ponds, and WiFi internet access.
Tailgating At Heinz Field
Depending on the game you’re going to tailgate, it can cost anywhere from $10 up to $50 to park near Heinz Field. Some of the best tailgating lots are the Gold lots and the Red lots. However, these lots tend to have the highest priced parking permits. Other lots may cost less, but they don’t offer the same tailgating experience. If you do choose another lot, try to stick with the North lots because they are closest to the main tailgating hot-spots. It’s more likely that people will overflow into these lots during the biggest games of the season.
Tips & Tricks
Since there are no alcohol sales in Pennsylvania on Sunday, tailgaters will want to buy your beer in advance. Also, it’s a good idea to plan on arriving five hours before the game, when the parking lots open.
